Loneliness

She hoped the trip would be long. It was easier for her to stare at the bus window than to try to deal with people. She felt that the whole thing had been a mistake and wanted only to forget it all. Staring out the window, she could clear her mind of everything except what passed before her eyes.

When he saw her first, she sat with her head resting light upon one hand which balanced precariously on one knee. She seemed so different from everyone else on the bus-separated somehow. She happened to break away from her reverie just long enough to look around, then return back to her solitary state. In that one moment he saw her eyes, he saw such loneliness that it made his very heart ache with sympathy.

Fighting his way to the back of the bus, he sat next to her. He then drew her out slowly, little by little, until the lonely look was gone from her eyes and a smile lit up her face. Her heart overflowed with happiness that she hadn't felt in ages.

Then the bus jerked and her eyes flew open and she saw the landscape passing before her eyes.
