My one visit to politics.

Here's a post in honor of two good friends.. one from each camp..
both very passionate about their respective person.

The coming 2008 presidential election has many debating on the behalf of their
favorite candidate, and in the past couple of months only two camps have
really had any passion that I've seen: Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee. After listening to some
heated discussion and doing some personal research, I've drawn a
conclusion: Ron Paul for president!

Many supporters of Mike Huckabee do so because of his moral views- he
promises to protect the sanctity of life and preserve marriage as
between one man and one woman; I don't doubt his moral conviction. But, you
have to ask whether or not he is the best man to lead America. I'm
not saying we shouldn't vote for a man with standards, but Huckabee's
stances are based on his personal beliefs. Putting a man who operates
off his personal convictions is dangerous. What is there to restrict
him? One of the greatest things about America is the open expression of
ideas, the freedom to hold your own opinions. The government doesn't tell
you what to believe, so we as Christians are free to let the power of
God work through us, to worship and love and let our testimonies
influence those around us. Legislation is a poor substitute for the saving
grace of Jesus Christ. I completely agree with Rev. Huckabee's stance on
most of the debates raging today- stem cell research, abortion,
marriage, to name a few- but I don't think that's enough to support him. I
support a candidate who lets me believe what I choose, not necessarily one
whom believes the same things I do. A lot of people just look for a
candidate that supports the same views they do when they participating in
politics. And while Huckabee's speeches make a good sound byte and
have a lot of people nodding their heads, he's sort of missing the point.
The point is that the government needs to get out of your life and stop
telling you what to believe.

Enter Ron Paul, who has said time and time again that the federal
government has no business being involved in such issues, that the state
governments, if anyone, should make these decisions. Putting control at
the local level-letting the people decide- is something I definitely
agree with.

Ron Paul, I think, is a true conservative. Get the government out of
your life and out of your pocket and let people take care of themselves.
There's a whole lot to say about him and his economic policy, but I'll
just say that it strikes me that Ron Paul knows what he's talking
about. The man is smart. He understands economics like nobody's business; he
believes in the free market, and his voting record shows that.

If we're talking about an honest politician, a down-to-earth family man
and a wholesome character, Ron Paul has Mike Huckabee matched. Paul is
a born-again Christian, but says he finds it revolting when religion
is turned into a political tool. He's been married to the same woman for
almost fifty years; he's a father of five, a grandpa of eighteen, and
a great-grandpa of one. He is honest, intelligent and educated. If you
need more, you can read his statement of faith and his own writings. He
speaks for himself.

And if you watch him speak, you'll find that he's not the most eloquent
candidate...because you can tell his speeches aren't canned. He's
saying what he truly believes. And his message is one of freedom, and of
liberty, and of a return to true American values- that is, the
Constitution. And that is why I support Ron Paul.
